Misfortune again
Nov 27th, 2007 by Peter
So my trusty D-Link 524UP router died. Well, trusty and trusty. It performed flawlessly except a minor issue with one particular game, but yesterday it died abruptly. No warning signs what so ever.
So now we can’t get all computers at home on the net, and almost as worse, can’t share our printer.
Just when I got used to having wireless control of the world with my laptop on my belly in the livingroom. Sigh.
I ordered this one instead. Looks like an ugly phone answering machine, but I had it recommended, ok? Looks can be decieving, so let’s hope it’s not crap.
In the attempt to send some links with possible new routers to another email, I continued my roll of luck and had my regular email-address added to the global spam filter. “Wooohoo??”.
This is actually the second time I have to call my host and explain that I am not a worldwide spam-king. Both times I used Mozilla Thunderbird, so not so sure I like that mail client any more. Could be a coincidence though. One of my friends tried the same, so don’t you eye me suspiciously, ok?
It will take about 5 days before I’m cut from the list again, so meanwhile I can only receive mails, and not send it unless I use webmail. Great – just great.
My D-Link just keeps on trucking :-) No problems here !!!
My new router sees to be cool too. A bit difficult to get the printer working, but else no problems what so ever. :)
1. Router looks good, mainly because the manufacturer has a well supported printer server in the chipset, and the USB’s to make it work. I’ll buy one if you like it – keep us updated. In terms of the actual routing side of things, the tech is very mature now, so problems will only ever be related to low quality components, poor firmware support, or bad luck.
2. Seriously doubt that your email client has any bearing on your problem. Bad luck maybe, malware/virus infection probably. Don’t bother with that MacAfee/Norton shite – it’s worse than useless.
Router looks fine. Still need to test it further with some games and so on to be sure its a good buy. I can see that my ping for Counter-Strike servers has fallen from an average 20 to about 15, so thats a good sign.
I had some issues with LOTR Online with the old router (needed static IP behind the router), but haven’t had the time to test it yet. If this is gone with the new router, I will give the Edimax my blessing. Already now I find the manual much better, but I still have to use their hotline, which was nothing less than superb at D-Link. Hard to beat that, eh?
I agree about Thunerbird. Really don’t think I can blame it, but gotta start thinking, when it was used both times. And no worries with McAfee an Norton. Wouldn’t be caught death with either of those memory hugging, CPU killing products. :-)
Oh…. And have to add that the router is not that ugly as it looks on the pic. Thumbs up for that too. It supports an extern HD or Flash memory for sharing too. Thats pretty nice.
Just checked about LOTRO Online. No probs what so ever. Seems VERY promising compared to my old D-Link.
