A little updating of the blog

So I finally decided to upgrade to WordPress 2.0.
I guess only very few can tell the difference, except maybe you have noted a few extra links and pictures. I must admit, that SQL database management, backup etc. is not entirely my thing, and therefore I have postponed upgrading to WordPress 2.0 for some time. Many a time have I looked at the upgrading instructions thinking, “geesh – this looks to complicated to be worth it”, and slowly forgotten about it again.
Well, this Saturday I did it. Really not that big of a deal if only you follow the instructions. Here’s to pessimism… Cheers!
Ok, its not like you hit setup.exe at watch the whole deal be done by it self like your average WinXP program. You have to read, think and do it in the right order. What I dreaded most was deleting my old installation fearing something got lost in the process. I don’t know if all users would call the upgrade worth the effort, but at least it gave me an excuse to play around with some new plugins. This I do not regret at all.
Especially the Lazyest Gallery is great. Even though I have seen better galleries, this one is easy to install and even easier to update with new pictures. Installing was a breeze for a semi-nerd like me. You upload some files in the blog dirs, open “WordPress admin” from the blog, and activate the plugin. Putting new pictures is just as easy. You point the plugin to a dir of your choice inside WP admin and upload your jpg pictures. Ding!! you’re done. Now you have a gallery.
Also I made a small “random picture” frame in the sidebar inserting a php-code (I have no clue what it exactly does, but it seems to work). I really like this feature. Only thing is that it seems to screw up, when you enter some areas of the blog. I must figure out how to fix this later. But for now I am happy. :-)
I also made new header pictures to the blog, and installed a plugin that chooses one of these at random. Great stuff if you ask me. I think it makes the blog feel more alive and “updated”.
If you like geekish WordPress plugins, you can find more about these WordPress Plugins link I have made to the right on the blog.
