Botanical garden
Apr 23rd, 2007 by Peter
Last summer C bought a tomato plant.
Big was the surprise when my father told her it would grow to reach the ceiling before long. Bigger was her excitement, when he told her she should save some of the seeds from its tomatoes and plant this year. She never thought about that, and neither did I. Would be nice with a plant again this year, so why not. Last years plant gave us approximately 35 tomatoes. And they were extremely tasty.
So a few weeks ago C planted the seeds in a pot and hoped a plant would show. It did……. Along with its 20 brothers and 20 sisters.
C is the type of girl who loves plants. Especially if it grows fruits and vegetables. She loves healthy snacks (unlike me). My father’s suggestion sparked a fire and C pretty soon started experimenting with other seeds. One of these was watermelon. You guessed it. There are now 6 watermelon plants shooting from a pot.
We live in a 84m2 big apartment. It is not meant for that many plants, so I suggested that we purchased a bigger box intended for flowers and put it out on the balcony. She bought the idea, but reconsidered it when she remembers our two rabbits being let lose in the same spot. They already ate more than one flower briefly licking some sun and fresh air. So back inside it went.
Here’s today’s pop quiz: Who’s the idiot who went to Germany and bought a bag of salad seeds in a moments weakness and gave them his wife? (You can’t win anything by the way).
Clue nr. 1: This is the same person who went and helped his parents make their herb garden at their home and brought the remaining seeds to his home. He also turned his back as his wife snatched the seeds and had her way with them.
Stupid is as stupid does.
So the situation is now a possible inferno of plants in our apartment. As far as I can count the range of plants are now:
-
Parsley
Watermelon (crossing my fingers that this baby won’t grow any melons)
Tomato (gave a few to my parents, but still have way too many)
Salad (will give a few to my mom and dad, but still…)
Spinach
Dill
As you should be able to guess by now our window is crowded with pots. Come summer I would bet the degree of humidity is maxed to a level where I’m ready to go postal on the botanical hell I’ll call home.
PLEASE HELP ME GET RID OF THE PLANTS OR THE WIFE! I’M DESPERATE! :-)
Here are some shots:
This is what I see every day. Imagine them at a later stage. The watermelons popping up.
I drove the “idiot” to Germany :)
I haven’t read the post, but I can see in the pictures that we all now know what to buy for presents, when we visit you and C…..MORE seeds and MORE pots. Looks like a botanical heaven ;)
Grow hair first.
You shouldnt have to worry too much about the watermelon, it needs to spread its vines out over the ground before it can produce fruit and there is no way at all you are going to have room for all those vines!
The rest of the seedlings of all the other plants still need to be thinned out a bit, that way the ones you do keep will be strong and more productive.
Maybe you can unload some of them on Kojak ;)
Tnx for the tips Sara. About unloading them on Kojak, it will be some tough deal. I’m afraid that his “green fingers” is not from digging in the soil. :)
Hard pressed, I must admit to having plastic flowers in my house :) “If it is green it can be killed” seems to be my motto, as I unwillingly test how long flowers can live on without continueous light and water :)
Plz no seedlings…would rather have finished products ;)
Its scarily true.
Its so bad that I once saw an Irish bloke walk past Kojaks house on Sct. Patricks day. He started gagging while trying to get past Kojaks gate, and before I knew it he was choking and died on the spot. Or was it a dream?… Really can’t remember anymore. But it was a vivid and realistic one if so.
As you’re both adept at horticulture, you should try growing other indoor plants. Like the spiky leaf variety. ;)
